Mentee Guidelines

In 2024, Cat's office hours on ADP are on closed and conducted limited ad-hoc basis. She offers paid mentorship sessions, which is more equitable for the demand on time. Please check out paid sessions, weekly newsletter and youtube videos coming soon.

Consider if this session is a coffee chat or a focused topic. Prior to the session, please submit the agenda in advance. Having a list of things to discuss helps maximize the time and know when a topic is "done".

Sample topics:

  1. Switching careers into UI/UX
  2. Product Development Frameworks & Processes
  3. Creating a roadmap for career advancement
  4. Self Employment & Freelance
  5. Managing expectations and surviving tech burnout

Principles of Mentor/Mentee relationship

  1. Reciprocate with a coffee, review, or success story. I am offering years of experience at no cost to you. If you are happy with our talk, tell me your success story on ADPList or Linkedin to solidify my profile with the community. A practical way of showing support for me is financially, buy me a coffee or be a subscriber for my newsletter.
  2. Feedback is a gift that requires reflection and action. Feedback is a gift of growth only if you are open to receiving it. My mentorship style is radical candor, which means challenging directly and caring personally. When you ask for feedback, all the work is on the mentor to provide expertise. In reality, nobody likes giving or receiving feedback. Effective sessions include your reflection, actions, and closing the loop for accountability.

What types of topics are over 30 minutes?

  1. Design Portfolio Review. A 30-minute conversation is typically insufficient to give you effective, actionable feedback. Most of these conversations run over 3 sessions because a deep dive is required for improvement. We can talk high level, which may or may not be valuable since reading and review takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
